Concussion 101
A concussion is a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) caused by a bump, jolt, or blow to the head. It occurs when a sudden force or impact causes the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull. This leads to stretching and damaging of brain cells and chemical changes in the brain. Concussions can cause an array of symptoms. The effects of a concussion can be serious and last for days, weeks, or even longer. Research shows no one treatment or method can expedite recovery, but proper management through the recovery process can help you regain full function and activity - "Every brain heals differently".

Areas of Concussion Management
Sport Related
All sport and activity carries its unique risk to head trauma. A proper assessment, healing process and return to play strategy is necessary to get you back to your activity and prevent long term consequences from concussions.
whiplash
Concussions are the result of the brain hitting the inside of your skull/cranium. We often hear, "I didn't even hit my head" - but any whipping of the head and neck can lead to a concussion.
Motor Vehicle Accident
Accidents happen. MVA injuries can be complex and involve multiple areas like the neck, low back and may involve concussions. A thorough assessment and treatment plan is critical.
Baseline testing
Most commonly provided for teams or athletes, establishing a baseline test of neurocognitive function, balance, occular function and more is the best way to accurately diagnose and manage a concussion if one were to occur.
Slip and fall
Particularly in Calgary's winter, a simple slip on the ice can lead to various injuries including whiplash and/or a concussion.
education and seminars
We can provide information seminars for your team, group or club. This can also include group pre-season baseline testing. Contact us for more information
